Newbery Award Winners

The Newbery award was the first award (1922) that was given for children's books. It is awarded annually by the American Library Association to the most distinguished children's book published in the previous year in the United States.
John Newbery (1713 - 1767) was a book publisher and seller. He was one of the first to publish books for children to read for pleasure and not just for instruction. Although they were published annonymously, it is probable that he wrote some books himself. He found good authors and illustrators and established a place in the publishing industry for children's books.
